The latest version of OpenLab (a GNU/Linux distribution specifically
designed for desktop use) has just been released. Codenamed 'Conina', it
follows on from previous versions 'Angua', 'Susan', 'Eskarina' and
'Perdita'.

The name 'Conina' was chosen this time because the original DW character
was born destined for a certain kind of life, but she found herself
wanting more and had to overcome her own nature in order to achieve
those dreams.

The OpenLab developers claim that, in much the same way, OpenLab was
started for one thing, education - but had evolved, sometimes painfully,
into a general-use desktop operating system.

Personally I'm looking forward to OpenLab's 'Esmeralda'. Now *that*
would be an OS with some interesting error messages...

The latter sounds more like Magrat, which wouldn't be /that/ much
better an experience than sharing your life with His Billness, as many
of us do. Is there a prominent Discworld character with the
personality of desktop Microsoft Windows... I don't know. Its
officiousness on licensing, its inflexibility particularly in respect
of other people using different systems, its insistence on doing all
the administration through nasty fiddly forms instead of
systematically, its failings on security... oh, I do know, it's the
head bloke in the Guild of Clowns.

I have been using Knoppix just for fiddling around, and had a devil of
a job downloading and burning a DVD ISO of its latest edition through
Windows, FAT32, and FTP servers which should know better. It's also my
Windows partition backup solution, embracing NTFS. What does the
OpenLab experience offer that may be better, for a desktop user?

Dr Whiteface :)

Although I have to say I think Ridcully is rather like that at times.

He tends to problem-solve with a hammer, metaphorically speaking - I
see that.

He also has noticed that if he deliberately remains obtuse then people
will take problems away and solve them themselves instead of insisting
that he should do it.

Yes, that's Windows-ish.

Definitely Mr Clete. I can just imagine my computer going 'Hat, hat,
hat' as it shuts itself down without saving.

Well, the name "Conina" doesn't sound anything like my linux laptop,
anyway, I don't even like her - especially because Rincewind's madly in
love with her, and I'm madly in love with him - makes me feel like
smashing up my laptop! :-)

ROFL! Yes!!!

I once (ah, youth) was foolish enough to download some Star Trek
message sounds to my ancient Mac Plus. When it (inevitably) all went
pear-shaped, the screen froze and Spock began repeating, endlessly,
"Most unpleasant situation, Captain. Most unpleasant situation,
Captain. Most unpleasant..." until I came very close to taking the
Ridcully approach to the problem. ;)

One of these days you've *got* to share these parallel-universe
Discworld books of yours with the rest of us 8-)...

Madly in love with /Rincewind/? /Must/ be a typo. Not even a
mother...... she ran away before he was born, you know. (That's where
he gets it from, probably. You know, like The Elephant Man's mum ate
all those peanuts.)
